What details must a UK business put on its website?
The legal minimum for a limited company, a sole trader, and anyone selling online, and where to put it.
See the templatesThe short answer: your name and a way to contact you, and for a limited company, the company number and registered office. If you sell online there is a bit more. It all fits in the footer and a short terms page.
A limited company
The Companies Act requires the website to show:
- The full registered company name
- The company registration number
- Where it is registered (England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland)
- The registered office address
- If VAT registered, the VAT number
It can be on one page, usually the footer or a contact page, as long as it is easy to find.
A sole trader or partnership
Your name (the actual person) if you trade under a different name, and an address where documents can be served. The E-Commerce Regulations also ask for an email address and, if you belong to a trade body or hold a licence, which one.
If you sell online
The Consumer Contracts Regulations add: a full description of what you sell, the total price including VAT and delivery, how to pay, how and when you deliver, and the 14 day right to cancel for most goods. That goes on a terms page linked from the checkout.
Where to put it
Footer: business name, company number, registered office, VAT number. Contact page: email and phone. Terms page: the selling rules. Privacy page: what you do with data.
Our templates
The footer carries the business name automatically and there is a terms and privacy page to switch on and fill in. Company number and registered office go in the footer text. Two minutes.
