Shopify vs Wix for a UK small business
Prices, card fees, what each is actually for, and when neither is right.
See the templatesThe short answer: Shopify is a shop that can have pages. Wix is pages that can have a shop. If selling online is the main thing, Shopify. If the website is the main thing and you sell a few items on the side, Wix. If you are a service business with nothing to sell, neither is built for you.
Prices
| Shopify Basic | Wix Core | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | £30 | £16 |
| Online card fees | 2 percent plus 25p, Shopify Payments | Depends on provider, about 1.4 to 2.9 percent |
| Selling online | Included | Needs the Business plan at £25 |
What they are for
Shopify: stock, variants, shipping rules, abandoned baskets, a till in the shop. It is heavy because shops are heavy.
Wix: a brochure site with a gallery and a contact form, and a small shop if you want one. It is lighter, and the shop is less capable.
When neither
A plumber, a cleaner, a salon or a cafe does not need a shop engine. A simple site with prices and a phone number does the job and costs less. Ours are £99 and £20 a month. And a small maker with thirty products does not need Shopify's engine either: our shop template is the same price and the card fees go to your own Stripe or PayPal.
