How to get a website for your business

The three ways to get one, what each costs, how long it takes and who does the work.

The short answer: you build it yourself on a website builder, you pay someone to design one for you, or you take a ready made template and fill it in. They differ on who does the work, not on what you end up with.

1. Build it yourself

Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy give you the tools for £16 to £17 a month. You pick a layout, write the words, sort the photos, connect your web address and keep it up to date. Good if you enjoy that kind of thing and have an evening or three. Most people underestimate the time.

2. Pay a designer

A freelancer or small studio designs and builds it for you. UK prices for a four or five page site run £1,200 to £2,000, often with a monthly care plan after. You get something made for you and a person to ring. Allow four to eight weeks.

3. A template, filled in

A ready made design for your kind of business, with your words, photos and colours. Because the design is done already it costs a fraction of a bespoke build. Ours is £99 to set up and £20 a month, live within 48 hours, with your web address included and your own login to change things.

Whichever you pick, get these in writing

  • Is the web address registered in your name?
  • What does the monthly fee cover?
  • Is there a minimum term?
  • If you leave, do you keep the site and the address?

Prices in this post were checked on 2 October 2026.
