How much does a small business website cost in the UK?
Website builders, freelancers, studios and monthly plans, with real prices and when we checked them.
See the templatesThe short answer: a small business website in the UK costs anything from about £16 a month on a website builder you put together yourself, to £1,200 to £2,000 for a freelancer to build four or five pages for you, with a monthly fee of £30 to £100 on top if they look after it. Below is where those numbers come from and what you get for each.
The three ways to get a website
There are three main ways to do it:
- A website builder such as Wix or Squarespace. You pay monthly and build it yourself.
- A freelancer or small studio. You pay once to have it designed and built, and often monthly for hosting and changes.
- A template website done for you. A ready made design, filled in with your details, for a small one off price and a monthly fee.
Website builders
These are the published UK prices we checked on 2 October 2026:
| Builder | Plan | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Wix | Core | £16 a month |
| Squarespace | Core | £17 a month |
The monthly price is low because you are the web designer. You choose the layout, write the words, sort the photos, connect your web address and keep it up to date. Some people do that well. Others start, get stuck halfway, and pay every month for a half finished site.
Freelancers and small studios
When we set our own prices in August 2026 we went through UK pricing guides and real price lists published between 2024 and 2026. The typical figures:
| What you are buying | Typical UK price |
|---|---|
| A four or five page website from a freelancer | £1,200 to £2,000 |
| A bespoke site from a small studio | up to about £4,000 |
| Redesigning a small site | £2,000 to £5,000 |
| A starter online shop | around £2,500 |
| Hosting and care plans, monthly (checked September 2026) | £30 to £100, most £40 to £99 |
The build price pays for someone else's time: the design, the words, the photos, the testing and the setup. The monthly plan usually covers hosting, your web address, backups and small changes.
One off price or monthly plan?
Most of the cost of a website is the build. After that, a simple site needs very little: hosting, the web address renewed each year, and the odd change to prices or opening hours. So the questions to ask any web designer are:
- Is the build price fixed, or charged by the hour?
- What does the monthly fee cover, and is it compulsory?
- Is the web address registered in my name?
- If I leave, do I get my site and my web address?
Get those answers in writing before you pay anything.
