Do I need a website to run Google Ads?

Ads need somewhere to send the click. What that page has to be and a cheaper first step.

By Charlie B, Deliberate Design.

The short answer: for most Google Ads, yes. An ad is a link, and the link has to go somewhere. Google allows some ads that only show your phone number or your Business Profile, but the ads most small businesses want send people to a page, and that page decides whether the click you paid for turns into a customer.

Why not just send them to Facebook?

You can, and people do, and it is where most of the wasted ad money goes. The person clicked an ad for "emergency plumber". They land on a Facebook page with a photo of your Christmas night out and no phone number above the fold. They leave. You paid for the click.

What the page needs

  • The same words as the ad. If the ad says boiler repair, the page says boiler repair at the top
  • Your phone number, tappable, before any scrolling
  • One thing to do: ring, or send a message
  • Loads in a second on a phone

The cheaper first step

Before paying for ads, set up a free Google Business Profile and a simple website. A lot of businesses find the free search traffic is enough and never need to buy ads. If you do run ads later, you already have the page to send them to.
