Can I move my website from GoDaddy?

What you can take, moving the domain out, the renewal trap, and the order so nothing goes dark.

By Kai M, Deliberate Design.

The short answer: yes, and the domain is the only part that needs care. GoDaddy's builder does not export pages, so the site is rebuilt from your words and photos. The domain transfers out once it is unlocked, and the one trap is timing it around the renewal.

What moves

  • The domain, if it is in your GoDaddy account under your name
  • Your words and photos, copied out
  • Email, if you use Microsoft 365 through GoDaddy: that can stay or move separately

Moving the domain

  1. Unlock the domain in your GoDaddy account and turn off privacy for the transfer
  2. Get the authorisation code
  3. Start the transfer at the new registrar. For a .co.uk it is a tag change and takes minutes; for a .com it takes up to five days

The renewal trap

Do not transfer in the last week before the domain renews. If the renewal fires mid transfer you can pay twice or, worse, the transfer fails and the domain lapses. Move it with a month in hand.

Order so nothing goes dark

New site built first. Domain pointed at it. Check it is live. Then cancel the builder. A site goes dark when people cancel first and build second.

See it before you move. Paste your current web address into our importer and we fill a template with your name, words and photos. Nothing is stored and it costs nothing to look.

Questions first?

Ask us anything about your website. Kai and Charlie answer the phone and the emails.
