Alternatives to Wix and Squarespace for a small business website

The short answer: the alternatives to building it yourself on Wix or Squarespace are another builder, a freelancer or studio who builds it for you, or a template website that someone fills in and looks after for you. Which one suits you depends less on price and more on who you want doing the work.

What Wix and Squarespace cost

On 2 October 2026 the published UK prices for the plans most small businesses pick were:

For that you get the tools. The design, the words, the photos and the upkeep are yours to do.

Why people look for an alternative

• Time. Building a good site takes longer than most people expect, and it is time away from the business.
• Getting stuck. Choosing a layout, writing the words and connecting a web address is where a lot of sites stall.
• Nobody to ring. When something looks wrong, it is a help page or a chat window.

The alternatives

Another website builder

There are other builders, but the deal is the same: a monthly fee and you do the work. If building is the part you want to avoid, a different builder will not change that.

A freelancer or small studio

Someone designs and builds the site for you. UK guides published between 2024 and 2026 put a four or five page site at £1,200 to £2,000, often with a monthly care plan of £30 to £100 after that. You get a site made for you and a person to deal with.

A template website done for you

A ready made design for your kind of business, filled in with your details. It costs far less than a bespoke build because the design work is already done. This is what we do: our template websites are £99, then £20 a month hosting, live within 48 hours.
